Financial Compensation of a Surrogate mother

When considering to proceed with assisted reproduction one of the options offered to intended parents is that of surrogacy. Many questions arise when considering this approach with the most sensitive beeing that of financial costs.

One of the most common questions we receive from both the intended parent(s) and the volunteer surrogate mother is how much will the surrogate mother be paid. This delicate topic has been taken into consideration and the Greek legislation has specified this and consideres compensation for medical reasons relating to the whole procedure as well as for absense from work.

The allowed medical compensation refer’s to medical expenses necessary for the surrogate pregnancy. These expenses include all expenses made, such as implanting the fertilized egg to the surrogate mother, medication required, expenses throughout the pregnancy and childbirth costs, provided that these are not covered by the surrogate’s insurance.

Therefore, the total amount to be paid derives from the issued invoices, payments which are made for the above reasons. Please note that payment can only be made if the Court has issued the required legal surrogacy permission prior to the procedures.

Furthermore, there is also compensation for absence from work, whether it is necessary to achieve the pregnancy, the pregnancy itself or childbirth. Please note that this type of compensation is considered for employed surrogate mothers and for those days that they are absent from work and not been paid any wages or salary. If the surrogate mother is unemployed, the amount of compensation would cover the remuneration she would receive if she was a worker on the basis of her professional training. In any case, the compensation cannot exceed 10,000€, but it is only given when a prior sirrugacy Court permission has been granted.
